Even with JVM you can use other languages as JRuby, JPython and others... this isn't new and not even a breakthrough you can get with .NET.

The thing is that most GNOME hackers don't like JAVA.. period! They still look at it as it was 5/6 years ago. And adding to that, the GNOME founders, Federico and Miguel, who's company, Ximian, was bought by Novell, are the same ones who brought Mono to daylight. But even though, most GNOME hackers simply don't want .NET, but companies like Novell are pushing it, and other major distros, like Ubuntu are following the same path (see Banshee, Tomboy, Beagle..).

IMHO, if I were to choose between Mono and Java, I'd go for Java as at least it's now fully open (and not as Mono, which is OpenSource software but is heavily surrounded by a bunch of Microsoft patents, which for now are silent as there is an agreement between Microsoft and Novell).

Anyway, currently there a lot of things going on on based on Python, and I'm pretty happy with it. Vala is amazing too :-)

Vala is amazing and I sincerely hope it becomes the way for the future of gnome (but it isn't mature yet btw). I also have to agree with Paulo Pires there: Java has come a really long way on the past years and it's an amazing language now (and fully open and free of patent-issues).
